Utah - Bryce Canyon : Bryce Canyon consists of several Canyons and Overlooks. Its ridge runs about 25 miles north and south at the edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau in Southeast Utah. The main ridge is part of the Pink Cliffs that are the top part of the Grand Staircase. Beneath the Pink Cliffs are the Gray, then the White and the Vermillon. The rain & melting snow flowing down the ridges of the Pink Cliffs towards the Paria River causes the erosion of the ridges into rich, multi-colored spires, pinnacles & other rock formations which are called "Hoodoos". The views are spectacular, inspiring and awesome. No words can describe the beauty that surrounds it. Even though the photos provide good views, there is still nothing like being there hiking some of the trails & going to the Overlooks & Viewpoints. Seeing views such as the "Silent City" in the main amphitheater, "Thors Hammer" along Navajo Trail, the "Hunter" & the "Rabbit" at Agua Canyon Overlook, the "Grottos at Bryce Point, the Castle formations seen at Fairland Point and Paria View, hiking through "Wall Street" and the views looking back on the switchbacks as you climb back to the top of the Canyon from there are just some of the "named" spectacular sights formed by the erosion of the Pink Cliffs. On clear days from some of the Overlooks you can see over 100 miles in the distance including the Kaibab Plateau which is where the North Rim of the Grand Canyon is located.

Utah - Grand Escalante National Monument : The Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument covers 1.9 million acres in southern Utah. It was declared a National Monument in 1996 causing much controversy since it is such a large area. The land consists of a huge variety of formations including multicolored cliffs, plateaus, mesa, buttes, pinacles and canyons. It is divided into three sections - the Grand Staircase, the Kaiparowits Plateau and the Canyons of the Escalante. The land rises in tilted terraces which form the Grand Staircase consisting of Vermilion, White, Grey and Pink Cliffs in that order. Powell Point and Bryce Canyon form the highest steps of the Staircase with their colorful Pink Cliffs. There are two paved roads, Hwy 89 & Hwy 12. The rest of the roads are primitive and remote and are accessed by backpacking and hiking. One can get outstanding views of the territory by driving either of the two highways and hiking Canyons with designated trails. We drove Hwy. 12 and also hiked Calf Creek Canyon to the Upper and Lower Falls. All of the pictures in this gallery were at stops we made to capture some of the spectacular formations. Calf Creek Canyon has its own Gallery.

Utah - Calf Creek Canyon : Calf Creek Canyon and its lower falls were for many years one of the hidden, little visited attractions of southern Utah until the creation of the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Access to the falls is a 5 plus mile round trip trek through the Canyon which follows the creek. Walking between mineral-streaked cliffs of Navajo Sandstone, hikers pass beaver ponds and pre-historic rock art sites enroute to the 126-foot-high Lower Calf Creek Falls. There is little elevation change as you hike the path but it has some short, steep and rocky sections, and a surface of mostly soft sand so the hike can be quite strenuous. The trail passes three Indian petroglyph sites and two ruined stone-built granaries, in alcoves in cliffs. The canyon walls become steeper and the route passes through woodland as you hike. Some cliffs have especially pretty streaks of what is called desert varnish which is formed by gradual deposition of iron-containing minerals by evaporating rainfall. The Falls can be heard some distance away but are hidden from view until right near the end. At the falls, the creek emerges from a V-shaped channel at the end of upper Calf Creek Canyon and cascades over a near-vertical cliff face.
